Units of work

Kindergarten to Year 2

The Growing grains unit uses the story of The Little Red Hen as its starting point. The main task involves the students undertaking a scientific investigation by growing seeds, collecting data and analysing their results. Students develop their understanding of the needs of living things. The resources included in the unit show similarities and differences between small scale production outlined in the Little Red Hen and larger scale production through images.

Years 3 and 4

The Manufacturing grain products unit provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge about grains and legumes. They undertake group research using a number of fact files to develop their understanding of the importance and history of grains and legumes in the diets of people all over the world.

Students explore the mass production of bread or another product and compare the large scale production to small scale production of bread in the classroom. This main task for the unit involves the students to designing and making a system to mass produce a grain-based product for a school event.

Years 5 and 6

The Designing an information product unit provides an opportunity for students to use their knowledge of grains and legumes in a healthy diet to develop an information and communications product to promote the benefits of including grains, grain based products and legumes in the diet of a particular target group. Students will survey the particular target group of consumers to ascertain their knowledge of the place of grains and legumes in their diet and develop the information product to meet their needs. Students have an opportunity to use a range of software packages to develop their product. The unit provides additional information about design.
